This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking our community to help us #CuttheCarp by donating to our carp removal efforts. Our goal is to raise $4,000 to remove 4,400 (31,000 pounds!) of carp in 2020.
WHY ARE CARP A PROBLEM?
Carp are a non-native species in Green Lake that migrate to the ideal shallow waters of the County Highway K Marsh to spawn. Once in the estuary, these bottom-dwellers cause phosphorus-loaded sediment to enter Green Lake, where one pound of phosphorus can fuel the growth of 500 pounds of weed and algae.
Carp destroy important native vegetation, stir up the lake bottom, fuel algae growth, and muck up the water. Each carp can lay ONE MILLION eggs, which means removing them from the lake each year is critical.
WHERE DID CARP COME FROM?
If they’re not native to Green Lake, then how did they get here?
Back in the 1800s, European immigrants coming to America brought carp with them and the US Commission of Fish and Fisheries introduced them to Wisconsin lakes as an important food source. Seeing the potential for a lucrative business, entrepreneurs built rearing ponds in the Green Lake Mill Pond to raise the fish for sale as a cheap, good source of food.
HOW DO WE “REMOVE” THEM?
With the help of our lake management partners, commercial fisherman harvest the carp from the lake and the County Highway K Marsh using large nets. The nets are then hauled in, game fish are sorted out, and the carp are loaded on to trucks to be shipped to markets that consume carp as a food source.
