Native Prairie Seed Collection

Saturday, October 19, 2019, 10:30AM – Noon

Lisa Reas will be leading volunteers on a late morning (to avoid morning dew/frost) prairie flower and grass seed collection event at Dawson Prairie in the Green Lake Conference Center. We will be collecting seed from a variety of native plants such as purple coneflower, blazingstar, compass plant, milkweed, asters, little bluestem, Indian grass, and prairie dropseed. Seed collection is a popular event among gardeners as participants will be discussing prairie plants and their function in the ecosystem (habitat, erosion control, etc.) and such things as native plant use in garden settings. The seed collected will be dried and used at sites such as Winnebago Trail and Sunnyside as we further work to restore lands once overrun by buckthorn. The event is open to all ages; children are welcome. We will provide paper bags for the seed and refreshments will be provided.

Location: Dawson Prairie in the Green Lake Conference Center

Buckthorn Cleanup on Conservancy Properties

October-November TBD

The Green Team is ready to tackle another year of fall buckthorn removal on Saturday mornings. This fall is the team’s 12th year cleaning up various Conservancy properties. Everyone is welcome to participate in the work and the fun!

The team will be working each and every Saturday morning this fall until the weather shuts them down. Work site locations will vary from week to week, so stay tuned for location adjustments.

Be sure to wear long pants and sleeves, as well as leather gloves and solid shoes, to each cleanup event. Anyone with access to chainsaws is encouraged to bring them along to aid in the buckthorn removal.

If you think you can make a Saturday morning or have any questions, please contact Jerry Specht at or by phone at 920-229-4468 so the team can plan accordingly!
