Beginning in 1990, the WI DNR conducted eight plant surveys on Green Lake and Silver Creek with the latest being conducted in 2007. Plant surveys are useful because they can help estimate the frequency of occurrence of plants found in a water body. What is frequency of occurrence? It is important to note that these plant surveys do not estimate the total quantity of plants found in a water body.
Surveys on Green Lake concluded that the dominant plant species found in Green Lake have remained relatively consistent. These dominant plants includes coon tail, hybridized Eurasian water milfoil (an invasive species), water lily, and filamentous algae. Twenty to thirty additional native species were also surveyed in lesser densities.
The WI DNR suggests conducting periodic plant surveys for all Wisconsin lakes. When the time approaches for Green Lake to conduct another plant survey, we will explore working our partners, the WI DNR and the Green Lake Sanitary District, to aid in its completion.
