“I have seen American White Pelicans on Green Lake on several prior occasions (they have been
more frequent on Grand River Marsh and Lake Puckaway), but never in the numbers that have been present on the inlet this spring. It's hard to say for sure why the pelicans are here this year, but their numbers have been increasing annually in Wisconsin. Twenty-five years ago it was a fairly rare bird to find in Green Lake County, with no nesting taking place in the state, but the pelicans started nesting at Green Bay in 1994 and the colony increased to over 100 nests by 1997, and they have continued to nest there in good numbers. Pelicans also started nesting at Horicon Marsh in 2000, and the numbers of nests there have also increased dramatically.”
- Tom Schultz, nationally acclaimed bird artist comments on the presence of pelicans this year on Green Lake.
