| Hammer's Trail
Hammer's Trail is a .6 mile public trail located within the Assembly Creek and Springs conservancy property. It has been constructed in the memory of Brian Hamming, Green Lake summer resident and GLA member, friend and colleague. Brian twice received GLA's Environmental Protection Grant where he tirelessly worked with the Green Lake Association (GLA) and the Green Lake Sanitary District (GLSD) to monitor and eradicate purple loosestrife and other Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) from Big Green Lake. Brian shared his AIS work as a speaker at GLA’s summer lecture series, and he worked with GLA’s partners to help build and install the carp barrier along Hwy A which has helped reduce Green Lake’s carp population.
In September, 2008, Brian passed away unexpectedly. Shortly after Brian’s passing, the Green Lake Conservancy Partnership worked with the Green Lake Conference Center to purchase Assembly Creek and Springs, 24 acres of property which includes over 1,100 feet of water frontage on Big Green Lake (Norwegian Bay). The property also includes a wonderful combination of woods, wetlands, natural springs and a beautiful tributary. At the time of its purchase, plans were also made for the creation of a public trail through this newly acquired land in memory of Brian.
It is only fitting that Brian’s memorial is a collaboration of partners working to preserve and protect Green Lake, much like Brian’s previous work. The Hamming family, the Green Lake Association, and its partners are grateful to Brian's friends, colleagues, and other loved ones whose donations made this memorial trail possible.
