Education Scholarships

In the spirit of protecting and enhancing Big Green Lake, the Green Lake Association, historically, awarded a single, non-renewable $2,000 scholarship to a deserving student in the local area.  The scholarship was awarded to students who:

  • Have participated in activities and/or projects that relate to Wisconsin’s natural resources, in particular those that benefit Big Green Lake and its watershed
  • Were committed to the conservation of natural resources
  • Intended to pursue an education related to conservation.

2009 Scholarship Recipient

On Wednesday, May 15, 2009, Sara Mueller, GLA Board President awarded Andrew Docter with its Environmental Education Scholarship. Andrew graduated in 2009 from Markesan High School with a 3.97 GPA and will be studying Environmental Science at UW-Green Bay in the fall of 2009.

Some of Andrew's previous environmental experiences have included participating in the Lower Fox Valley Watershed Monitoring Program, testing water quality on the Grand River in Markesan, volunteering at Horicon Marsh, helping with purple loosestrife remediation efforts on Big Green Lake, and attending the 2007 Conservation Career Camp at UW Stevens Point. Throughout high school, Andrew was a member of several organizations including FFA, 4-H, National Honor Society, Science Club, Badger Boys State, Markesan's jazz, pep, and marching bands. In addition to his academic obligations, Andrew also volunteered at various local organizations including Crystal Lake Beach Camp for Children, the United Way, and the Salvation Army.

When asked why Andrew wanted to pursue a degree in Environmental Science he stated, "I want a career in which I can help monitor, repair, and council corporations on ethical management practices."
