GLA's Youth Fishing Clinic— New in 2009! Children under the age of 16 learn the basic knowledge needed to begin fishing and the importance of clean water to good fishing. Mini lectures, demonstrations, and activities take place in a station format to maximize learning experiences. Local anglers share their knowledge and wisdom about topics such as water safety, fishing regulations and ethics, fish identification, tackle assembly and bait types, knot tying, casting hooking and landing the catch.
Thanks to all who helped make our first event so successful; our sponsor Walleyes for Tomorrow-Green Lake, GLA volunteers Linda and Dennis Walters, Mark Judas, Rick Clewin, Sara Mueller, Jim Kaiser and Dave Richter, DNR Warden Nate Ackerman, GLA Board Members, and North Bay Sport and Liquor.
Daycholah Movie Premiere— New in 2009! Daycholah, A Natural and Cultural History of Green Lake premiered on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Thrasher Opera House to a standing room only crowd. In 2007, The Green Lake Association, with a generous anonymous donation, spearheaded an effort to fund the story of Daycholah in video documentary format. The GLA’s funding, along with a grant from the Green Lake County/Ripon Community Foundation, helped purchase video equipment, software, a chartered fishing trip and helicopter flyover, and videography editing.
Daycholah – a misspelling, from the Ho-Chunk language, but perhaps spelled phonetically; describing a green-colored lake. Our Daycholah is Green Lake—the state’s deepest inland lake and one of only a handful of lakes in Wisconsin that host a two-tier fishery (warm- and cold water). While the story of Daycholah is far from over, it’s early Native American history, later European influences, and rich natural capital is a story worthwhile telling.
The documentary script was written by local biologist/educator T. L. Eddy, and accompanied by his collection of still digital photography images. Videography and editing were conducted by Al Folker, recently retired from the UW-Oshkosh Department of Communication. Many early morning canoe outings on Silver Creek, local marshes and bays allowed images and video to capture the sublime beauty and nuances of Green Lake. In addition, numerous interviews of local lake people are included, along with scenes of local buildings and historical points of interest.
The script was narrated by local community members in studio, and a soundtrack of original music by Green Lake musicians accompanies the script.
Hammer's Trail Construction and Dedication—New in 2009! On Saturday, September 5th, 2009 GLA and its partners celebrated the grand opening and dedication of Hammer’s Trail, a public trail in memory of Brian Hamming. Those attending the dedication gathered at the Tea House located within the Green Lake Conference Center grounds where volunteers, partners, and the Hamming family provided directions to the trail head. Snacks and refreshments were available as people arrived, walked the trail, and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Motorized all terrain vehicles were also available for those who needed assistance on the trail. Learn More About Hammer’s Trail
Green Team Outings In 2008, the Green Lake Association, the Green Lake Conservancy Foundation, the Green Lake Sanitary Distric, and the Green Lake School District partnered to form the Green Team. The Green Team's purpose is to introduce and share with the public, through the talents of volunteers, those special, unusual or unknown natural features in the Green Lake area. These family-oriented summer events typically occur the first Saturday of June, July, and August, and September.
GLA's Junior Ice Fishing Outing If the weather cooperates and Dartford Bay is frozen, the Green Lake Association plans a morning of family fun for those interested in fishing through the ice. Local ice anglers sharing their expertise, free jig poles, warm ice shacks, lunch, and goodie bags make this annual event a crowd pleaser. 2008's event was sponsored by: the Green Lake Sanitary District, Walleyes for Tomorrow-Green Lake Chapter, and Puchyan Longbeards.
